A video has been circulating that falsely shows Vice President Kamala Harris making incoherent statements during a speech. The altered clip inaccurately portrays her saying: “Today is today. And yesterday was today yesterday. Tomorrow will be today tomorrow. So live today, so the future today will be as the past today as it is tomorrow.”
Altered Video
The genuine video from a rally on reproductive rights at Howard University does not contain this quote. The original speech occurred last Tuesday, where Harris discussed the importance of understanding one’s place in history and the current moment.
“So I think it’s very important—as you have heard from so many incredible leaders—for us, at every moment in time, and certainly this one, to see the moment in time in which we exist and are present, and to be able to contextualize it, to understand where we exist in the history and in the moment as it relates not only to the past, but the future.”
Spread of Altered Clip
The altered video emerged over the weekend, where audio was edited to make Harris appear to speak incoherently. This version was first shared by an account known for editing political footage for humor. Though many shared it jokingly, others misconstrued it as genuine.
One widely circulated tweet read: “If you get what Kamala Harris is saying yesterday then tell me tomorrow so that I can make my past better” and included the video, which by Tuesday had over 29,000 views.
Authenticity Verification
The original footage, streamed by NARAL Pro-Choice America, confirms Harris did not say the fabricated quote. Additionally, the White House transcript of her speech lacks the altered statement.
Harris’ appearance at Howard University coincided with President Joe Biden’s reelection bid announcement, emphasizing the significance of the event.
