Violent Incident at Amy Acton’s Campaign Stop in Ohio

An armed individual attacked Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton during a campaign event at the Canfield Fair in Ohio on Sunday. The assailant injured multiple people before being apprehended by authorities. Mahoning County Democratic Party Chairman Chris Anderson confirmed the arrest, noting the individual was equipped with various weapons.

Amy Acton remained unharmed. However, her campaign officials reported several injuries among attendees. The incident’s details remain scant, as law enforcement officials have not yet released a statement.

Wayne Penny Jr., campaigning for Ohio’s 59th State House District, witnessed the event. He described how the attacker forcefully moved through the crowd, knocking down several volunteers and an elderly man with Parkinson’s disease, causing the man to fall and hit his head. Security forces swiftly intervened, detaining the attacker, who was discovered to possess brass knuckles and a firearm.

“Dr. Acton is grateful for the immediate response by law enforcement and hopes for the injured’s recovery. This kind of violence is unacceptable in Ohio. She stands firm against the chaos and divisiveness threatening our community,” said Addie Bullock, Acton’s communications director.

Acton’s opponent, Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, condemned the violent act. He emphasized that candidates should engage with voters without fear of threats. Connie Luck, Ramaswamy’s communications director, echoed his sentiments condemning the violence.

Information requests from the fairground’s police department were directed to the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department, which has yet to respond. Similarly, the Ohio State Highway Patrol has not provided further information.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed relief that Acton was unharmed and extended thoughts to those injured. He stressed the unacceptability of violence or its threat at public or political gatherings, reiterating the need for safety in such venues.
