West Hollywood Recognizes Polyamorous Relationships with New Ordinance

2 days ago 0

West Hollywood, California, has taken a significant step by unanimously passing an ordinance recognizing polyamorous relationships. This decision allows individuals in multi-partner domestic relationships to receive certain protections under city law.

The ordinance states that the city aims to formally recognize and respect the rights of individuals in such relationships, protecting them from discrimination. It highlights the increasing prevalence of diverse relationship structures involving committed relationships between more than two adults.

The ordinance highlights the need to recognize and protect all persons in multi-partner domestic relationships.

The West Hollywood City Council’s vote ended with a 5-0 decision in favor. Those in relationships with three or more partners can now file a declaration with the city clerk, granting them rights such as hospital and jail visitation.

Despite these advancements, the ordinance does not formally recognize polyamorous relationships as ‘marriage’ or registered domestic partnerships at the state or federal level. West Hollywood joins a small but growing number of local governments offering some protections for multi-partner relationships.

Professor Brad Wilcox from the University of Virginia expressed concerns in response to the ordinance. He warned that it could normalize polyamory and potentially lead to polygamy, which research links to increased risks for children and gender inequality.

Wilcox emphasizes that while the ordinance appears progressive, it could result in unintended consequences detrimental to women and children. He points to polygamous arrangements potentially fostering competition for attention and resources.

Professor Wilcox expressed concerns about the potential societal impact of legally recognizing polyamorous relationships.

In March, West Hollywood previously passed an anti-discrimination ordinance supporting polyamorous relationships. The new ordinance will become effective 30 days after its adoption.
