WNBA Player Angel Reese Addresses ‘Protected Species’ Comment Controversy

Angel Reese, a star player for the Atlanta Dream, made a statement regarding the controversial comment by Toronto Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello ahead of the Dream’s game against the Chicago Sky. Brondello referred to Reese as a ‘protected species’ during a previous game, a phrase common in Australian sports culture without racial implications.

Reese expressed gratitude towards the WNBA for taking action against Brondello, emphasizing that the league should be free from discrimination and hate. She acknowledged the overwhelming support she received while positioning the comment as discriminatory.

“I appreciate Sandy’s apology, and the support over the last 48 hours has been overwhelming,” Reese remarked. “The league acted rightly, and there’s no place for hate.”

The controversy erupted after a game incident involving Reese and Tempo forward Nyara Sabally. Following Sabally’s injury, Brondello argued that Reese received favorable treatment from officials, using the term ‘protected species.’

Brondello, who is Australian, noted that the phrase is common in her home country’s sports culture, typically directed at athletes perceived to be favored by officials. She apologized publicly and sought a personal conversation with Reese to explain her intentions and background.

“Angel, I’m sorry,” Brondello stated on X. “I used a phrase that I regret. My frustration was with officiating. I understand its impact, especially for Black women, and I’m deeply sorry.”

Brondello expressed her desire to be part of a solution rather than a problem and stressed her longstanding commitment to working with Black women in the league.

While Reese has shown appreciation for the WNBA’s steps, she has not yet engaged directly with Brondello. Her social media comments suggested an interpretation of the phrase as an attack, raising the profile of the incident.

Brondello hopes for a resolution and a chance to personally clarify the misunderstanding. The WNBA’s decision to suspend Brondello reflects its commitment to fostering an inclusive environment.
