Young Baseball Talent Emerges from Aurora-Elgin Region

Dominic Battista, a graduate from Oswego East, faced uncertainty earlier this spring due to a hamate injury. This concern was about its impact on his chances in the MLB draft. However, as the season progressed, Battista was thrilled simply to be part of the conversation. Reflecting on his journey, he said, ‘It was in the back of my mind. But a couple of years ago, I wouldn’t have even imagined having my name called out of high school.’

On Saturday, amazing changes occurred. The Kansas City Royals selected Battista in the fourth round, making him the 119th overall pick. Though he hasn’t signed yet, indications are strong that he will proceed. Battista expressed his readiness, stating, ‘More than likely I will sign. I know I could go to college and sign again, but I’m ready to join the system.’

Battista was among three draftees this weekend from the Aurora-Elgin area. St. Charles North alumnus Jayden Lobliner was picked in the ninth round for the St. Louis Cardinals, while Ryan Niedzwiedz from West Aurora went to the Colorado Rockies in the 15th round.

Battista’s profile grew significantly over the past two years, rising on prospect lists due to his performances at high-profile showcases and travel tournaments. After his injury recovery, Battista noticed an increased number of scouts attending his games. He remarked, ‘I feel like that caught my attention. I just tried to play baseball, honestly.’

The transition for Battista is swift. He hosted his graduation party Sunday and then faced the likelihood of becoming a professional athlete within a week. He views this opportunity as unique and one he won’t take for granted.

Lobliner, since the age of five, pursued his dream of playing in the majors. Having spent two years each at Kansas State and San Diego, he is now closer to achieving his lifelong goal. ‘It’s been a long time coming,’ Lobliner shared, underscoring his pride in defense as his standout skill. As the West Coast Conference’s defensive player of the year, he flew Wednesday to the Cardinals’ spring training facility in Florida, eager to start his professional journey.

Niedzwiedz, preparing diligently during his time at SIU-Edwardsville, experienced his dream coming true on Sunday. With friends and family by his side, he heads to Colorado’s spring training facility in Arizona. He states, ‘I knew this is how it would go. Now I have this professional job and can’t wait for my day to revolve around baseball.’

This draft weekend, surrounded by supporters, was meaningful for Niedzwiedz. ‘It was really cool to see how much everyone cares,’ he acknowledged, appreciating the shared journey. As a versatile utility player, Niedzwiedz is ready to adapt in Scottsdale.
