YouTuber Jesse Ridgway and his wife have faced a difficult decision. This week, they shared their experience of terminating a pregnancy after learning their unborn child would have Down syndrome. Ridgway announced the news in a post on X, explaining the emotional weight of the situation after doctors diagnosed the baby with Trisomy 21.
Ridgway stated, “The choice was not made lightly. We really appreciate all of the personal stories that you guys shared with us, especially the unconditional support we received from fans no matter what we decided.”
With over 4 million followers on his McJuggerNuggets YouTube channel, Ridgway has kept his audience informed throughout his wife Ashley’s pregnancy. In a personal video, they shared the moment of confirming the diagnosis, with Ashley visibly affected.
“I know some of you may be very disappointed to hear this news,” Ridgway wrote. “We are devastated. This has been extremely traumatic for both of us, especially Ashley. She underwent the procedure earlier this week and is on the mend. Thankfully, everything went smoothly, but emotionally we are drained.”
Ridgway shared statistics about Down syndrome, highlighting potential health challenges such as heart defects, hearing issues, eyesight challenges, impaired immune function, developmental disabilities, and others that impact quality of life.
The announcement sparked widespread reactions on X, formerly Twitter. Some responses were thoughtful and empathetic, while others offered criticism and support for Ridgway’s decision.
In response to criticism, Ridgway wrote, “I’ve never seen such hate and vitriol for two people grieving the loss of their unborn child and making an impossible decision. The last 24 hours have exposed a side of humanity that is deeply disturbing.” He acknowledged the challenge of discussing such experiences publicly due to potential backlash.
Ridgway emphasized the importance of addressing these difficult conversations openly, stating, “Luckily, after 20 years on the Internet, this is par the course for me taking on the crazies, so I’m glad I can help further the conversation.”
