The San Francisco 49ers faced challenges regarding linebacker Dre Greenlaw’s presence for the Week 6 ‘Monday Night Football’ game against the Washington Commanders. Greenlaw, a crucial part of San Francisco’s defense, received a one-game suspension from the NFL due to an incident during Sunday’s 32-29 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.
The incident involved Greenlaw headbutting linebacker Ernest Jones, who was not wearing a helmet, resulting in Greenlaw’s ejection from the game. Greenlaw, 29, appealed the suspension, and the NFL made a decision on Tuesday. According to Michael Signora, NFL’s senior VP of football & international communications, the suspension was upheld by hearing officer James Thrash, appointed by both the NFL and the NFL Players Association.
Greenlaw ranks second on the team for tackles, with 37, just behind Fred Warner, who leads with 50 tackles. His suspension is a significant setback for a 49ers team already struggling with injuries. The team has eight players on injured reserve, including defensive tackles Alfred Collins, Sam Okuayinonu, CJ West, defensive ends Andrew Farmer II, Mikail Kamara, linebacker Nick Martin, cornerback Nate Hobbs, and safety Darrick Forrest.
Adding to their challenges, the team is also missing key players such as edge-rusher Nick Bosa, defensive tackle James Thompson Jr., and safety Marques Sigle due to injuries. With fellow linebacker Garret Wallow out for multiple games due to a hamstring injury, the 49ers are left with a thin linebacker squad including Warner, Jaden Dugger, Luke Gifford, and Ogbo Okoronkwo for the upcoming game.
