Alberta’s Premier Calls for Referendum Vote on Secession

3 weeks ago 0

Premier Danielle Smith announced plans to let Alberta citizens vote on whether they wish to stay in Canada or hold a referendum on secession. The vote is scheduled for October.

Why the Vote?

The move follows a court ruling in Alberta that deemed a petition to initiate a secession referendum unconstitutional. The court cited a lack of consultation with Indigenous groups who could be affected by secession.

Despite supporting staying in Canada, Ms. Smith expressed concern about the court’s decision impacting democratic rights. She noted the lengthy appeals process and emphasized the need to address the issue promptly. She stated that delaying the discussion only prolongs uncertainty and suppresses voices wanting to be heard.

Hundreds of thousands of citizens on both sides have signed petitions. Ms. Smith indicated that her decision considers their rights, aiming to simplify the legal challenges faced by both pro-independence and pro-Canada groups seeking a vote.
