A 66-year-old woman from Atlanta, Margaret Swan, was fatally stabbed on a MARTA train. Transit police described the incident as a random attack.
The attack happened between the Lakewood-Fort McPherson and Oakland City stations. MARTA Police Chief Scott Kreher called it a senseless act of violence. Thoughts are with the victim’s family and witnesses of the event.
Details of the Incident
John Elijah Matthews, 25, faces a murder charge in connection with the stabbing. Matthews allegedly began the attack by cutting Swan’s throat. This occurred just seconds after he approached her seat on a train nearing the Oakland City station.
A warrant obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta revealed that Swan was sitting alone on the train. Matthews reportedly walked to her side of the train and stood near her. CCTV footage showed that less than 20 seconds later, Matthews produced a knife and attacked Swan, inflicting 18 to 20 stab wounds in an unprovoked assault.
Response and Arrest
Surveillance footage documented the attack inside the train car. MARTA police arrested Matthews on the platform of the station. During the attack, Swan screamed for help. Matthews was observed on CCTV throwing her to the floor. He stood by her until the train reached Oakland City station.
Upon arrival, Matthews exited the train still holding a knife. Officers quickly intervened and arrested him.
Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but Swan succumbed to her injuries. The attack was reported at 1:29 p.m. at the Georgia State MARTA station.
The incident has heightened concerns about train safety in Atlanta. In a related event last week, another person was stabbed multiple times at the Georgia State Station.
