Taiwan Launches Significant Military Drills Amid Rising Tensions

On August 5, 2026, Taiwan initiated extensive military drills designed to test commanders’ responsiveness to unexpected enemy maneuvers. This marked the first time Taiwan imposed temporary internet limitations as part of these exercises, senior officials confirmed.

The annual Han Kuang exercise, spanning ten days, commenced early Wednesday after orders from an underground command center in Taipei prompted readiness actions. These include the dispersal of fighter jets and emergency naval deployments, according to two high-ranking Taiwanese officials who provided insights to Reuters under the condition of anonymity.

Incorporating fresh strategies, Taiwan is adopting a ‘backbrief’ approach, similar to practices in the U.S. military. This method involves junior officers restating mission instructions to their superiors, enhancing coordination, as officials explained.

One key focus of the drills is to address potential wartime threats from China, which claims Taiwan despite resistance from the island nation. The exercises examine scenarios where China might attempt to cripple crucial infrastructure early in a conflict.

Since their inception in 1984, these exercises are set to include, for the first time, intentional reductions in mobile internet speed. This measure tests how the civilian population would communicate under bandwidth constraints.

The military is additionally simulating the relocation of major arsenals and mobilizing civilian factories. Escort drills along Taiwan’s Pacific shores aim to address growing concerns over potential Chinese military efforts to disrupt Taiwan’s trade lines with its allies.

Toughening Exercises Reflect Real-world Scenarios

A defense official noted the realism of current exercises compared to past laboratory-like setups. “You are entering a real field environment, facing real bottom-line conditions,” the official stated, illustrating Taiwan’s commitment to more practical training scenarios.

Resilience exercises continue to play a significant role, challenging local authorities on maintaining governance amid emergencies such as potential earthquakes or invasions.

The unpredictability of the exercises requires commanders to quickly adapt and issue new orders in scenarios departing from initial plans.

The drills involve over 20,000 reservists. On a Taipei school sports field, reservists practiced mortar firing and rifle positioning as part of the exercise routine.

Additionally, Taiwan’s military is introducing an ’embedded reporter’ mechanism. This initiative assesses the dissemination of information in wartime conditions and counters misinformation. Officials emphasized the importance of public awareness and preparedness among Taiwan’s citizens.
