Israel and Lebanon have decided to implement a ceasefire following a U.S.-organized trilateral meeting. This meeting took place on Tuesday and Wednesday, as confirmed by a U.S. State Department release.
The ceasefire announcement came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump had discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and representatives from Hezbollah. Both parties agreed to a cessation of hostilities.
On Monday evening, hostilities were still reported as the Israeli military intercepted two projectiles from Lebanon. Reuters noted these events, while the Associated Press (AP) reported that Israel had conducted strikes in Beirut’s southern suburbs earlier that day.
Ceasefire Conditions
The State Department stated that the ceasefire depends on “a complete cessation of Hezbollah fire and the evacuation of all Hezbollah operatives from the South Litani Sector.”
In a joint statement, the involved governments outlined commitments to restore stability and enhance security arrangements in Lebanon. They emphasized that the future relationship between Israel and Lebanon is the responsibility of their sovereign governments.
This ceasefire could be seen as a diplomatic success for the Trump administration, which has aimed to use military pressure alongside negotiation to prevent wider conflicts in the region.
Statements from President Trump
In a post on Truth Social, President Trump discussed the agreement. He mentioned asking Netanyahu not to initiate a major raid on Beirut, to which the Prime Minister agreed by withdrawing troops. Trump’s post expressed hope for a lasting peace, saying, “Let’s see how long that lasts — Hopefully it will be for ETERNITY!”
The State Department’s release also condemned Iran’s destabilizing activities in the region, which include supporting proxies and other aggressive acts.
A prior ceasefire had been in place since mid-April, as reported by the AP.
This is an evolving situation and more updates will be provided as they become available.
