National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard has announced her resignation following the diagnosis of her husband, Abraham Williams, with a rare form of bone cancer. The announcement sparked controversy, with criticisms from media and Democratic officials. A Fox News report highlighted the inappropriate nature of politicizing Gabbard’s departure during such a personal crisis.
In a heartfelt post on X, Gabbard revealed that Williams is at home recuperating after a complex surgery. She detailed the nearly seven-hour procedure to remove a sacral chordoma, a rare cancerous bone tumor. Despite the challenges, the surgery was successful, and Williams is now focused on recovery.
Gabbard, who took office as DNI in February 2025, expressed her intention to step down by June 30 to support her husband fully. Her resignation was first reported by Fox News Digital. President Donald Trump has named Federal Housing Finance Agency chief Bill Pulte as acting DNI to succeed Gabbard.
Throughout her career, Gabbard has served in the U.S. Congress and as a U.S. Army Reserve officer and combat veteran. Her resignation letter, obtained by Fox News, reflects her gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
Gabbard highlighted her husband’s crucial support over the years and emphasized her need to be by his side during his health struggle. President Trump acknowledged her service, expressing confidence in her husband’s recovery and appreciation for her contributions.
The National Cancer Institute describes chordoma as a rare bone cancer that may develop at different points along the spine, including the sacrum. The Institute notes its slow-growing nature, yet acknowledges the complexities involved in treating such a rare condition.
