In the early days of President Trump’s second term, some Russian elites anticipated a reset in relations with the U.S. They hoped for profitable business engagements, putting the issue of Ukraine aside.
Over 16 months later, the most notable agreement between the two countries is a hockey game in Moscow. Announced during President Vladimir Putin’s economic conference in St. Petersburg, it is scheduled for July 1 and involves Russian and American players.
Since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the economic forum has been a platform to demonstrate resilience against Western sanctions. Russia is focusing on internal resources and fostering relationships with the Middle East and Asia.
Despite U.S. sanctions, Russia seeks to engage with some American individuals. However, full business relations with the Trump administration have not resumed. The country remains split between security forces opposed to the West and technocrats who desire improved relations with Washington.
This year’s economic forum featured a session about Russian-American cultural ties. Rodney Mims Cook Jr., the first U.S. official present since 2018, headlined the session. He is the chairman of the Commission of Fine Arts, advising the White House on projects like the ballroom expansion and a proposed triumphal arch in Washington.
