Water began to refill the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool following recent renovations, as noted by President Donald Trump from the Oval Office. The pool, coated in a blue protective layer, is being readied for the United States’ 250th anniversary on June 4, 2026. During an event, Trump showcased a video where water began bubbling into the newly painted basin.
The president described the paintwork as ‘American flag blue,’ highlighting that the task was completed a day prior. Live footage captured water collecting in the central area of the basin, with workers and trucks observed in the vicinity. The administration indicated in a court filing that filling the pool with water would be finalized by Sunday.
Trump also announced plans to construct a ‘promenade,’ which would connect the rear of the Lincoln Memorial to the Potomac River. He mentioned the proposed name, the ‘Trump Promenade,’ expressing uncertainty about its final designation.
While Trump estimated the project costs between $1.5 million to $2 million, records show contracts worth at least $14.8 million for the undertaking. The work was first announced in April, prompted by a friend’s comments on the pool’s previous state.
The reflecting pool, initially built in the 1920s, spans over 2,000 feet and is situated between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. It is a notable location, having hosted Martin Luther King Jr.’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech in 1963. Previously, the basin held about 6.5 million gallons of water, equating to ten Olympic-sized swimming pools. A 2012 renovation introduced a system that draws water from the Tidal Basin, circumventing the use of city drinking water.
Amidst regional drought conditions, the project has seen criticism. Some argue Trump focuses excessively on personal projects over voter concerns like living costs, especially before elections. Accusations also point to attempts to transform the pool into a swimming pool aesthetic.
Last month, the Cultural Landscape Foundation, a Washington-based nonprofit, filed a lawsuit to halt the work, criticizing the new ‘dark grey’ paint for introducing a ‘theme park’ look. The Trump administration reported to the court that the work was finalized even as legal resolution remains pending. Attempts to acquire comments from the Interior Department went unanswered.
