Democrat Xavier Becerra moved forward to the general election for California governor. Becerra presented himself as the seasoned candidate for the role, aiming to succeed Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. He emphasized his 35 years of public service, including roles as state attorney general and U.S. health secretary, to claim he is the most qualified in a crowded field. “I am ready to lead the fight to uphold California’s promise to ensure we have governance worthy of our gifts,” Becerra stated on election night.
The identity of Becerra’s opponent in the general election remains uncertain. His primary competitors include Republican Steve Hilton, a former Fox News commentator and supporter of President Donald Trump, and Democrat Tom Steyer, a climate activist billionaire who invested $215 million into his campaign.
Becerra’s background includes being born and raised in Sacramento by Mexican immigrant parents. He is married with three daughters. He mentions that his family’s immigrant history reflects his “underdog” campaign for governor, which lacked significant early support but gained momentum in its closing stages.
After Democratic contender Eric Swalwell faced sexual assault allegations and exited the race, Becerra seized the opportunity to consolidate Democratic backing. He quickly secured endorsements from labor groups and Latino legislative leaders.
Becerra pledges to continue the state’s opposition to President Trump. As attorney general, he engaged in over 120 legal challenges against the Trump administration on issues such as immigration and climate policy. Trump has also had disputes with California over its vote count, making unsubstantiated claims of widespread fraud. The controversy continues as federal prosecutors announced investigations into alleged election misconduct.
Republican Steve Hilton advocates limiting mail ballots to those who request them, moving away from sending them to all registered voters.
During the race, opponents scrutinized Becerra’s tenure as health secretary, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic and the migrant children crisis in 2021. His department faced criticism for inadequate conditions in shelters and insufficient vetting of sponsors.
If elected, Becerra plans to declare emergencies to tackle high energy costs, address housing shortages, and freeze home insurance rates. While California is one of the most diverse states, its governors have predominantly been white men. Becerra could become the first Latino to hold the position since the late 1800s. Newsom is unable to run for a third term due to term limits.
