President Donald Trump faced criticism during a recent examination of the Sports Broadcasting Act. The focus was on the National Football League’s exclusive streaming of games, which forces some fans to spend nearly $1,000 to watch their teams. However, a Democratic representative used the occasion to critique Trump after he attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
President Trump’s Historic NBA Finals Attendance
Trump made history as the first sitting president to attend the NBA Finals. He watched the New York Knicks play against the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks won the first two games in San Antonio but lost the home game.
During a hearing mainly about NFL streaming costs, Rep. Jerry Nadler from New York took the opportunity to link Trump’s presence to the Knicks’ loss. He remarked, “We cannot discuss anything related to sports today without taking note of the sports story happening in this country today – the New York Knicks’ drive for an NBA championship. Tonight is Game 4, and as long as Donald Trump stays far away from Madison Square Garden, the Knicks should do fine. Let’s go Knicks.”
Security Measures and Public Reaction
Trump’s attendance led to heightened security measures in New York City. Security fences were erected around Madison Square Garden, and the Secret Service, along with law enforcement, ensured strict security which resulted in longer entry lines. Watch parties were canceled due to these security concerns, though they were expected to resume for Game 4.
The audience at Madison Square Garden gave Trump a mixed reception, contrasting with his previous attendance at the college football national championship in Florida. Despite the varied responses, Trump maintained that the NBA is ‘good entertainment,’ though he noted its ‘left-wing’ tendencies.
In his second term, Trump has attended several sporting events including the Super Bowl in New Orleans, the Daytona 500, the college football national championship, the men’s tennis U.S. Open, and the Ryder Cup.
