Political Controversy Over Candidate Names in Alaska Senate Race

2 weeks ago 0

A significant political dispute is unfolding in Alaska with potential implications for Senate control. The issue centers on how many candidates named Dan Sullivan can be on the state’s Senate ballot in November.

On Friday, Dan J. Sullivan, a former teacher, fought to maintain his candidacy against Senator Dan S. Sullivan of Alaska, following an effort by an elections official to disqualify him. Both are Republicans.

While Dan J. Sullivan is not anticipated to run a competitive campaign, his presence on the ballot raises concerns for Republicans. They worry that voters might mistakenly vote for him, aiding Democratic candidate Mary Peltola, a former Representative, in a race critical to Senate control.

Republican Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom announced an investigation into Dan J. Sullivan’s candidacy on Monday. Her office cited ‘credible allegations’ of coordination between him and Mary Peltola to deliberately confuse voters.

On Wednesday, Alaska’s top elections official, Carol Beecher, acting under the lieutenant governor’s oversight, contacted Dan J. Sullivan. She informed him of potential ineligibility and set a Thursday evening deadline for him to provide documentation supporting his candidacy.

Both Dan J. Sullivan and Mary Peltola deny any coordination regarding his campaign. In a statement, Dan J. Sullivan criticized Lt. Gov. Dahlstrom’s actions. He asserted they cast ‘the impression that the state government is being used to protect an incumbent senator from facing competition at the ballot box.’
