Trump Administration Targets Birth Tourism Visa Abuse

1 week ago 0

The Trump administration is cracking down on birth tourism, a scheme involving foreign nationals seeking visitor visas to give birth in the U.S. and secure citizenship for their children. Recently, authorities disrupted a network in West Africa using false documents for visa applications, involving over 100 individuals.

The State Department uncovered more than 400 birth tourism cases from Europe linked to six companies. These companies coached applicants, arranged housing, and set up delivery plans. U.S. officials revoked visas and are working with local authorities to dismantle such operations.

The effort aligns with Trump’s criticism of birthright citizenship. A 2025 executive order aims to narrow automatic birth citizenship. A 2020 policy instructed consular officers to deny visas to those coming primarily to give birth.

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly emphasized ending birth tourism to protect taxpayers and national security. According to Ira Mehlman of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, visa fraud, including birth tourism, poses a significant problem.

Authorities have secured convictions in California against operators of companies like USA Happy Baby for facilitating birth tourism. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued a postpartum center in Houston for alleged involvement in over 1,000 births.

Mehlman urged Congress to enhance visa applicant vetting and prosecute fraud cases. He advocates legal action against entities facilitating the scheme both domestically and internationally.
