An armed suspect shot and killed a 63-year-old man on Monday night in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. After the incident, the suspect confronted police officers with a weapon and was shot by them during a foot chase. According to Chicago police, the events unfolded shortly before 8:30 p.m.
Officers on patrol in Uptown responded to reports of gunfire. Investigations showed that the 63-year-old victim was in a dispute with someone he knew when the suspect pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots, hitting the victim. The victim was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The suspect fled north along the 4800 block of Clark Street, prompting a foot chase by the police. Officers caught up with the suspect on Argyle Street, where he pointed his weapon at them. The police fired at the suspect, injuring him, and immediately provided medical assistance at the scene. The suspect was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston and was listed in critical condition.
A firearm was recovered from the scene. Three officers involved were taken to a local hospital for observation. The Chicago Police Investigative Response Team was notified, as was the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.
The officers who discharged their weapons will be placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days as part of standard procedure following police-involved shootings.
