California Governor Gavin Newsom revealed this week that the Justice Department is investigating him, an action he claims is politically motivated due to his consideration of a presidential run. He announced via a social media post that former President Donald Trump directed this investigation involving his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom. Newsom reported that federal agents recently visited the homes of his family, friends, and former employees seeking documents and records.
Newsom argued that the investigation is an abuse of power, insisting that agents are searching for a crime rather than having discovered one. He assured that he has nothing to hide and will continue with his political activities.
He isn’t coming after me because of mean tweets, but because I am considering running for President,Newsom wrote.
Observing a familiar pattern, Democrats see Trump’s actions as utilizing legal troubles to bolster political support. Trump leveraged his own indictments to strengthen his 2024 campaign by rallying his base against what he portrayed as a weaponized government.
Newsom mirrors this narrative, referring to Trump as “the most corrupt President in American history” in a follow-up post, asserting that the president loathes being criticized. Jim Kessler, a Democratic strategist from Third Way, expressed to Newsweek that this situation elevates Newsom’s profile among Democrats, portraying him as a significant threat to the current administration.
Kessler emphasized that being targeted by Trump’s Justice Department can significantly boost a Democratic candidate’s media presence and fundraising potential. Similarly, Democratic strategist Eddie Vale noted that these investigations could alter the 2028 political landscape, much like Trump’s previous confrontations.
Newsom’s Position in the 2028 Race
As one of the prominent figures in an unsettled Democratic field, Newsom has gained national attention through constant confrontation with Trump. He actively uses social media to criticize the former president, enhancing his standing in prediction markets.
At Polymarket, Newsom is viewed as having a strong chance of securing the Democratic nomination, outperforming potential candidates such as Kamala Harris and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. His competitive positioning extends to the presidency itself, grouped with figures like Vice President JD Vance.
Despite robust predictions, traditional polls present a less favorable position. An early June survey by Noble Predictive Insights placed Harris at 27% among Democrats, with Newsom trailing at 14%.
Nature of the Investigation
The specifics of the Justice Department’s probe remain vague. So far, they have not issued subpoenas to Newsom or his wife. Reports suggest the investigation may involve financial matters linked to the couple and the activities of nonprofits in their network.
Focal points include the California Partners Project, a nonprofit founded by Siebel Newsom, and the practice of “behested payments” that allow officials to solicit donations to charities. The nonprofit reportedly secured $5.1 million through such payments since 2020, as reported by Politico.
While supporters claim these funds support public-benefit work, ethics groups like California Common Cause warn of potential misuse. California Democrats describe the DOJ’s actions as an intentional abuse of power.
Future Political Ambitions
Newsom has yet to confirm plans for a presidential campaign but has acknowledged the possibility. He suggested his decision will be post-November midterm elections.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Newsom noted, “I’m not thinking about running, but it’s a path that I could see unfold.” He told CBS News he would consider a White House run seriously, indicating that his political future remains open.
For now, Newsom seems to leverage the investigation as a political tool rather than seeing it as a legal challenge. The eventual impact on voters and donors will become clearer as the 2028 field unfolds.
The Justice Department has chosen not to comment further, and inquiries directed to the White House have been referred back to the department.
