Investigation Underway After Tragic Plane Crash
Investigators are examining the wreckage of a business jet that crashed on a Texas highway, resulting in one fatality. The crash occurred after pilots had reported mechanical issues and requested an emergency landing at a nearby airport.
Heroic Rescue Efforts
The incident happened late Tuesday in Laredo, near the Mexican border, prompting bystanders to rush from their vehicles to assist. Video footage shows people using a sledgehammer to break the cockpit glass and improvised levers to force open the plane’s door. A firefighter entered the smoke-filled aircraft to rescue one remaining individual after others had escaped.
“While the loss of life is deeply regrettable, it is nothing short of a miracle that this tragedy did not become a mass fatality event,” said Laredo Mayor Victor Treviño.
Ongoing Investigation
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash. Laredo Police Chief Miguel Rodriguez Jr. stated that investigators were working at the crash scene on Wednesday.
Police withheld the identity of the deceased, honoring a request from their family. The plane had two pilots and three teenagers on board.
Details of the Flight
The Cessna Citation Latitude, a twin jet, departed from San José del Cabo, Mexico, heading to Austin, Texas. Operated by NetJets, a company associated with Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, the jet crashed shortly after pilots reported to local air traffic control about low fuel and power issues.
Dashcam footage showed the aircraft crashing on the Loop 20 highway. It hit a light post and collided with a car, the latter resulting in a motorist’s hospitalization.
Scene Descriptions
Zayra Garza, who witnessed the crash and recorded footage, described the surreal scene as “like part of a movie.” Her video captured locals breaking cockpit glass and assisting those inside. Smoke filled the air as a firefighter extracted the last passenger.
Five police officers were treated for smoke inhalation after aiding in rescue efforts.
Garza expressed concern about a potential explosion. “What was worrying me was the fire,” she said.
