British actor Michael Byrne, known for his performances in iconic films such as “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” and “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” has passed away at the age of 82. Byrne died on June 20.

Byrne had a prolific career that spanned from the 1960s, with his last credited role noted in 2023 according to IMDb. Among his notable roles, he featured in Mel Gibson’s “Braveheart” where he portrayed a violent soldier named Smythe.

He began his career in television, appearing in series such as “No Hiding Place,” “Silent Playground,” and “ITV Saturday Night Theatre.” His film journey gained momentum in 1963 with “The Scarlet Blade,” which was known in the United States as “The Crimson Blade.”

Before his film career flourished, Byrne made significant contributions on stage. He performed with Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre Company, taking roles in productions like “Romeo and Juliet,” “The Cherry Orchard,” and “Much Ado About Nothing.” His work also included “Death and the Maiden at the Royal Court,” “The Double Dealer,” and “The Seagull.”

In the “Harry Potter” series, he played the older version of Gellert Grindelwald, a well-known dark wizard. Over his impressive seven-decade career, Byrne accumulated more than 170 credits across television, film, and theater according to reports from Variety.
