Aminah Knight, a former public-school teacher, aimed to celebrate a major Islamic holiday with a unique gathering for Muslim families near Dallas. Her plan involved hosting a swim party at an indoor water park during Eid al-Adha.
The initial mosque she approached declined to partner, disapproving of a swimming celebration for the occasion. Still, Ms. Knight was steadfast. She wanted an event for families, especially young women and girls who, like her, enjoyed swimming but preferred privacy over the attention that full-body swimwear often attracted at American pools.
Determined to create a special experience, Ms. Knight visited various mosques throughout North Texas, promoting her event. She designed a website and flyers, eventually garnering substantial interest. The first event saw hundreds of attendees.
The water park collaborated with Ms. Knight for a repeat event the following year, granting her exclusive access to the venue and drawing an even larger crowd.
As Eid approached this year, Ms. Knight was ready to host the third annual swim party, now an anticipated tradition among Dallas-area Muslims.
