Serena Williams Withdraws from Wimbledon Doubles Due to Knee Injury

Serena Williams withdrew from her Wimbledon doubles match with sister Venus Williams on Saturday because of a right knee injury. The 44-year-old athlete sustained the injury during her singles match earlier in the week, which ended in a three-set defeat.

Serena expressed her disappointment on Instagram, sharing, “I’m heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles. Coming back to compete again has been a gift, and the opportunity to play alongside Venus once more meant the world to me. I did everything I could, but unfortunately, my knee just isn’t ready to compete.” Her post included images of four syringes, illustrating the fluid drained from her knee post-match. Accompanying the images was a video showing her walking with her right leg strapped and one of her daughters holding a cane.

Despite her current condition, Serena hinted at a potential return to the court, saying, “All I can say is stay tuned to a city near you,” suggesting she might play elsewhere before the U.S. Open.

The Williams sisters — Venus, aged 46, and Serena — were originally set to face Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra. Their match was the only first-round doubles event postponed to allow Serena more recovery time. Earlier in the week, Serena was defeated 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3 by 20-year-old Maya Joint from Australia.

Meanwhile, Venus participated in the mixed doubles tournament on Friday alongside Kevin Krawietz. The pair were defeated in straight sets by Tereza Mihalikova and Lloyd Glasspool. The Williams sisters hold six Wimbledon women’s doubles titles as partners.
