Heavy Rains Lead to Roof Collapse in New Jersey Store

Heavy rains hit New Jersey on Monday, resulting in a partial roof collapse at a large retail store. Two people were temporarily trapped inside, according to authorities.

Ocean Township police, Monmouth Court Sheriff’s deputies, and other first responders arrived at BJ’s Wholesale Club around 11:16 a.m., officials stated. At the time of the incident, 27 people were inside the store.

The sheriff’s office reported that two individuals were partially trapped but managed to free themselves and exit safely. A video from the scene shows rainwater flooding the store in Oakhurst, N.J.

Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden emphasized the unpredictable nature of severe weather. ‘This incident is another reminder of how quickly severe weather can create dangerous and unpredictable conditions,’ he said.

Sheriff Golden also praised the efforts of the first responders. ‘We commend all first responders who worked with urgency under challenging circumstances. Despite the ongoing flooding and severe weather affecting our communities, all worked seamlessly together to ensure everyone was safely accounted for. Their dedication and teamwork exemplify the very best of public safety.’

No injuries were reported immediately following the incident.
