USMNT Defeated by Belgium in World Cup Round of 16

The United States Men’s National Team faced a tough defeat against Belgium, losing 4-1 in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This loss marked the end of their journey in the tournament.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino addressed the team’s performance, acknowledging their struggles throughout the match. “From the beginning, we didn’t connect with the game. Even after we scored, leveling at 1-1, we conceded immediately. It wasn’t our day. We didn’t display what our team is capable of,” he shared with Fox Sports’ Jenny Taft.

Pochettino also complimented Belgium for their performance, noting their superiority in the match. Despite having 43% possession, Belgium managed 15 shots with seven on target, resulting in four goals. In contrast, the USMNT appeared disorganized and unable to replicate their previous form against other teams.

The only goal for the USMNT came in the first half, courtesy of a Malik Tillman free kick. Despite this, they struggled to find the back of the net again. Following Tillman’s goal, Belgium quickly regained the lead.

During a post-match session, Pochettino expressed readiness to discuss his future with the federation. “In the coming weeks, we’ll talk if needed,” he mentioned. “Now it’s time to rest and consider the future. I’ve enjoyed working with the team; discussions about my role will follow later.”

The USMNT had an opportunity to equalize in the second half, but Belgium’s Hans Vanaken capitalized on a mistake by US goalkeeper Matt Freese to score their third goal in the 57th minute. Freese had attempted to intercept the ball but stumbled, allowing Vanaken to strike past defender Tim Ream.

Further challenges arose when Christian Pulisic sustained an injury during the match. Although he initially continued playing, his mobility was hampered, leading to his eventual substitution. Pulisic watched helplessly from the bench as his team struggled.

Belgium added a final touch when Romelu Lukaku scored a fourth goal during stoppage time. Belgium will now face Spain, a top contender, in the quarterfinals.

With this elimination, the USMNT became the last of the host nations to exit the 2030 World Cup. While there were moments of excitement, fans were left desiring a stronger performance from their team.
