PITTSBURGH — James Triantos experienced the thrill of stepping onto PNC Park’s field on Friday afternoon. This visit held significant meaning; he had previously attended a Pirates game 13 years ago but returned this time as a major leaguer. The Chicago Cubs added the 23-year-old from Triple A before the series opener against the Pirates, while outfielder Kevin Alcántara was sent to Iowa.
Triantos shared his excitement, stating that he was grateful for the opportunity, describing the experience as surreal. He emphasized his determination to compete and aid the team in winning games. He expressed gratitude for the chance to play the game he loves.
First Call-Up Excitement
Triantos learned of his promotion after missed phone calls. He had set his phone to ‘do not disturb’ at Iowa’s team hotel. Marty Pevey, Iowa’s manager, called multiple times, but it wasn’t until a hitting coach banged on his door that Triantos received the news. His first call went to his parents, followed by a visit to his longtime roommate, B.J. Murray.
Approximately 15 friends and family members planned to attend the game at PNC Park, hoping to witness his major league debut. Although Triantos may not see much playing time due to the Cubs’ current roster, the experience in the big leagues is deemed valuable.
Adapting to the Majors
Triantos, ranked as the Cubs’ No. 11 prospect by MLB.com, offered versatility by playing five positions with Iowa. Manager Craig Counsell sees his primary use in the majors as second base, third base, and left field. Fast-paced decisions and enhanced accountability mark the key differences between Triple A and the majors.
The Cubs hold a strong position-playing group at the major league level and among their top prospects.
