Dramatic Near-Miss for Sepp Kuss on Tour de France’s Penultimate Day

Saturday marked the second-to-last day of the Tour de France, bringing with it a moment of high tension that almost resulted in a dramatic mishap. The incident was averted only by the presence of a strategically placed catch fence.

Stage 20 led the cyclists through mountainous terrain. As expected in such landscapes, daunting cliffs presented significant hazards. During this stage, American cyclist Sepp Kuss narrowly escaped a major accident.

Kuss found himself leading the race as he navigated a sweeping corner. Unfortunately, he under-steered, veering wide and collided with a low concrete barrier, just as the catch fence ended. The fence proved crucial as it prevented a potentially catastrophic fall down the steep drop on the other side.

The placement of the catch fence seemed fortuitous. It raised questions about whether it ended there by design or due to resource constraints. Regardless, Kuss likely felt immense gratitude for its presence. Cycling, by nature, tests one’s courage and resilience. Had Kuss fallen over that barrier, the outcome could have been severe.

It was a challenging day for Kuss. He experienced two crashes, with the latter proving to be more detrimental than the first. Initially, he managed to maintain his lead, but that changed with the second crash.

The second mishap caused him to lose the lead, resulting in a third-place finish for the stage. Yahoo Sports reports that a victory here would have marked the first stage win for an American since Kuss’s own triumph in 2021.
