Community Leaders Urge Governor to Intervene in Hospital Closures

Faith and community leaders are urging Governor JB Pritzker to intervene in the reopening of Weiss Memorial Hospital and West Suburban Medical Center. The ongoing legal dispute has kept the hospitals closed since last year.

The Rev. Robin Hood, a notable Chicago pastor, stated during a news conference, “The state has failed our families and seniors. We want him to meet with us, to work with the community to reopen our hospitals.” The leaders are insisting on a meeting within 72 hours with the governor and responsible administrative agencies.

A spokesperson from the governor’s office stated, “Despite intensive financial and operational support from the state, the hospitals’ leadership was unable or unwilling to keep the facilities in operation, and did not present a formal request or viable plan to continue operations.”

The collapse of Weiss, located in Uptown, followed Medicare funding threats due to numerous problems. West Suburban, situated in Oak Park, shuttered in March, with major issues stemming from billing system problems. Owners have been in court disputes following West Suburban’s closure.

Ramco Healthcare Holdings, owned by Reddy Rathnaker Patlola, sued Resilience Healthcare, alleging mismanagement. Cook County Circuit Judge Patrick Stanton previously denied placing these hospitals under receivership. He expressed hope for a framework leading to reopening, although negotiations have stalled.

Ramco has requested to enforce settlement terms or appoint a receiver after Resilience’s dissatisfaction with the agreed settlement. Resilience’s lawyer stated they received new documents that need review before proceeding.

Community leaders criticized the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board extending Weiss’ suspension of services for six more months, maintaining the hospitals’ closure status amidst legal and regulatory challenges.
