NFL Training Camps and Coaches in the NFC West

The NFL training camps are in full swing as teams return to field drills and practices during the summer. Fans have reason to celebrate as the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers will start the preseason on August 6 in the Hall of Fame Game, broadcast on NBC. The preseason will continue with more games starting on August 13, leading up to the regular season opener on September 9.

This offseason, numerous storylines have emerged for each of the league’s 32 teams. Attention has been already given to position battles, rookies’ chances to secure starting roles, and players at risk of being cut. The focus now turns to evaluating the head coaches throughout the league, particularly those in the NFC West.

Sean McVay – Los Angeles Rams

Sean McVay ranks first among NFC West coaches primarily due to his Super Bowl victory. Despite Kyle Shanahan’s reputation as a skilled offensive play-caller, McVay’s achievements include a Super Bowl ring. McVay’s career features a 92-57 record, seven playoff appearances in nine seasons, four division titles, three NFC Championship Game appearances, two Super Bowl appearances, and one victory.

This season, the Rams could make another Super Bowl appearance after acquiring Myles Garrett and potentially convincing Aaron Donald to delay his retirement.

Kyle Shanahan – San Francisco 49ers

Since 2019, the 49ers have been consistently successful under Shanahan, yet a Super Bowl win remains elusive. Shanahan has guided the team to five playoff appearances, four NFC Championship Game appearances, three division titles, and two Super Bowl appearances.

With key players like Brock Purdy, Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, Mykel Williams, Christian McCaffrey, and a strong defense, the 49ers could compete effectively in the 2026 playoffs. A potential encounter with McVay might be needed if they advance deeply.

Mike Macdonald – Seattle Seahawks

Entering his third year, Macdonald possesses a Super Bowl title despite his shorter tenure compared to Shanahan. His 24-10 record in two seasons includes a championship win, largely fueled by Seattle’s impressive defense.

With returning players like Sam Darnold, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and a solid defensive unit, Macdonald could enhance his standing as a coach in the coming years.

Mike LaFleur – Arizona Cardinals

Mike LaFleur begins his first year as head coach amid challenges. Unlike his successful brother, LaFleur faces a difficult situation in Arizona. The Cardinals rely on Jacoby Brissett at quarterback and struggle defensively. Interest lies in rookie Jeremiyah Love and WR Marvin Harrison Jr.

Expectations of success might be limited to a few wins next year. However, future prospects could improve with talented college quarterbacks potentially joining in the future.
