Utah has become a prime example of the mounting consequences of climate change. The state’s recent experiences with snow droughts and heat waves have had significant impacts, leading to further environmental challenges.
The winter snowpack in Utah was historically low, reaching unprecedented lows. In March, a heat wave exacerbated this situation, quickly melting the remaining snow. This rapid melting prompted the declaration of a statewide drought emergency.
Following these events, dry thunderstorms contributed to a surge in fires across Utah in June. These fires, fueled by strong winds, included one which became the sixth-largest in the state’s history. Each occurrence increased the risk of subsequent floods due to the altered landscape and environmental conditions.
A helicopter was observed dropping water on the Cottonwood Fire, which was reported burning near Beaver, Utah, on June 27, underscoring the efforts to combat these fires.
