Kansas Coach Brett Ballard Hospitalized After Serious Vehicle Accident

Brett Ballard, a well-known Kansas college basketball coach and former Kansas Jayhawks player, is currently hospitalized with serious injuries following a highway accident on Tuesday night. Ballard, head coach at Washburn University, was driving his 2024 Ford F-150 when the crash occurred.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that the accident happened on Interstate 470 in Topeka, shortly after 8:15 p.m. Ballard’s vehicle veered off the left side of the road, hitting a delineator post, going down a steep embankment, and eventually colliding with a concrete bridge pillar. The crash resulted in significant damage to the truck.

First responders took Ballard to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka for medical treatment. Officials confirmed that he was wearing his seatbelt during the accident, and he was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

“We are deeply saddened to share that Coach Brett Ballard was seriously injured in a car accident last evening,” stated Washburn University President JuliAnn Mazachek. “Our hearts are with Coach Ballard, his family, the men’s basketball program, and all who are affected during this difficult time.”

Ballard, originating from Hutchinson, Kansas, played as a guard for the Jayhawks from 2000 to 2002. He was coached by Hall of Fame inductee Roy Williams and later spent seven seasons as an assistant coach under Bill Self. Over the last nine seasons, he has successfully led the Washburn Ichabods, establishing them as one of Division II’s steady performers.

With a career record of 198-81 at Washburn, Ballard has taken the team to various NCAA Tournament appearances, positioning the Ichabods as consistent contenders within the MIAA. His coaching journey also included a stint at Baker University, where he guided the Wildcats to a regular-season championship in the Heart of America Athletic Conference and an NAIA national tournament showing.

The crash has impacted the basketball community deeply, with many supporters extending their encouragement and best wishes for Ballard’s recovery. Authorities are yet to disclose further information regarding the accident’s cause, and the investigation is still underway.
