Technology is deeply integrated into American education. However, those expected to utilize it often face time constraints. A survey by Pew Research Center reveals that 84 percent of K-12 educators feel they lack sufficient time in their workday to complete tasks such as grading and lesson planning. This statistic is crucial when schools consider introducing new technology.

The urgency of addressing this issue increases as schools adopt artificial intelligence in classrooms. According to the Pew Research Center, 25 percent of teachers believe AI tools cause more harm than benefit in education. Only 6 percent see them as beneficial. Despite this, technology adoption continues, highlighting uncertainties about real improvements in educational outcomes.

Cybersecurity Considerations

Cybersecurity poses additional challenges. The U.S. Department of Education reports that school districts encounter an average of five cyber incidents weekly. Schools rely heavily on technology not only for education delivery but also for daily operations. As digital use grows, decisions must balance security, privacy, and operational resilience with convenience.

These challenges lead school leaders to a critical question. After significant investment in digital tools, focus is shifting from acquiring more technology to evaluating if current systems enhance school operations. It’s become less about having enough software and more about whether the technology meets teaching and collaboration needs.

The Issue of Infrastructure

Nathan Stark, founder of FolioBridge, spent 16 years in schools before starting his education tech company. His work revealed that teachers navigate email, messaging platforms, and other systems to complete daily tasks. FolioBridge aims to centralize school communications and collaborations.

Stark’s idea originated when a teacher struggled to connect with a colleague teaching the same subject elsewhere. This experience reshaped his view on institutional support.

“Teachers should have greater influence over technology choices as they deal with its effects daily,” Stark emphasizes.

Administrative roles can overlook classroom workflows, making teacher feedback vital for identifying friction points.

Time and Efficiency

Time management is a common issue. Routine meetings and administrative duties should respect educators’ limited time. Simplifying workflows can shift focus back to preparation and student interaction.

The same logic applies to AI tools. When educators know how to use AI beneficially, it can aid lesson adaptation for individual needs. Stark advises cautious examination of automated systems influencing judgments about student performance.

Building a Support System

Infrastructure should support teachers. Schools must create opportunities for shared expertise, reduced administrative burdens, and broadened collaboration across institutions. Many operate in isolation, limiting educator collaboration while preserving unique culture and autonomy.

For education leaders, intentionality is vital. Each technology choice affects attention, security, and training. Schools need to judge technology by its ability to enhance teaching and learning environments.

As digital transformation continues, competitive advantage may shift from technology adoption to creating systems that free up educators to support students. “Teachers have always been the foundation of great schools,” Stark states. “Technology delivers its greatest value when removing obstacles, strengthening collaboration, and allowing focus on students.”
