Mark Ruffalo Responds to Antisemitism Accusations in Warner Bros. Discovery Merger Controversy

Actor and activist Mark Ruffalo has refuted claims that his criticism of the proposed Warner Bros. Discovery merger by the Ellison family amounts to antisemitism. In a statement to Fox News Digital, Ruffalo expressed his dismay at the accusation.

“The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest,”

Ruffalo emphasized that criticizing the Israeli prime minister’s actions or the companies supplying military technology should not be equated with criticizing Jewish people.

He underscored his stance stems from political convictions and assured it should not be perceived as antagonism toward Jewish people. Ruffalo highlighted the influence of Jewish friends and colleagues on his life and work.

The accusation originated from a Paramount spokesperson who alleged Ruffalo used “antisemitic tropes” in a corporate dispute context. This followed Ruffalo’s reposting of statements made by Safra Catz, a Paramount board member, regarding Oracle’s technology in support of the Israeli military.

In a related post, Ruffalo described Oracle’s technologies as “really profoundly scary” and criticized a Warner Bros. acquisition supported by Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle. He also expressed concerns about potential implications for a major media conglomerate and editorial freedom.

A Paramount spokesperson countered that words like “genocide” and “apartheid”, misapplied to a business transaction, diminish the genuine suffering they describe. The company emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards any prejudice.

Ruffalo reiterated the significant consequences of the merger, highlighting threats to editorial freedom and livelihoods. He questioned the unexplained foreign influence on editorial decisions within the Warner Bros. acquisition, referencing concerns from various lawmakers.

Amid legal challenges from 12 state attorneys general, the merger has paused until June 1, 2027, or a court decision. Ruffalo urged scrutiny of the deal for national security reasons.
