Over the weekend, Jed York, the owner of the San Francisco 49ers, was arrested in Ohio and faced misdemeanor charges for disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools. Initially, York faced a charge of engaging in prostitution, but prosecutors later amended it. The criminal tools charge stemmed from York’s use of his phone to reply to an undercover online advertisement.
York was apprehended at a mobile home community in East Palestine, Ohio, which is close to his birthplace in Youngstown. After posting a $5,000 bond, York was released. He received a one-day jail sentence for both offenses, to be served concurrently, and was credited for time served upon pleading no contest. Additionally, he was subject to a $1,150 fine.
The court records indicate York had his cellphone returned, and $160 seized was to be donated to the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force as part of the plea deal. York also completed an online course related to the incident.
Columbiana County Prosecutor Vito Abruzzino mentioned that such incidents often conclude with plea agreements. He noted that each case is examined based on specific facts, police evidence, and the defendant’s criminal history.
The NFL acknowledged York’s arrest and stated that it would review the matter under its personal conduct policy. Owners, much like players, can face fines or suspensions for such violations. The NFL did not impose any punishment on New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft in a previous case after charges were dismissed in Florida for allegedly engaging in illegal activity at a massage parlor.
The 49ers released a statement indicating no further remarks on the resolved legal matter. York assumed day-to-day team operations in 2008 and became the principal owner in 2024. Under his leadership, the team has shown consistent performance, highlighted by three Super Bowl appearances and significant achievements like the construction of Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, which opened in 2014.
