The judge questioned the center’s leadership on why they hadn’t followed his previous order to remove Trump’s name. Lutnick expressed that Trump’s involvement was crucial for the center’s renovation plans and fundraising.

Court Involvement

The recent court battle originates from Trump’s actions to reshape the John F. Kennedy Center since taking office in January 2025. He appointed allies to replace bipartisan board members, aiming to control the center’s future.

These moves encountered resistance and led to legal proceedings over the ability to rename a federally designated memorial. The board’s decision to rename the center and start major renovations prompted a lawsuit by Democratic Representative Joyce Beatty. A federal judge agreed with Beatty, ruling that only Congress can rename the institution.

U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper previously ordered the removal of Trump’s name from the center in May. He stated that the governing statute intended the center as a memorial to Kennedy, with Congress holding naming rights.

The judge also blocked a two-year closure for renovations, citing inadequate justification. Following his ruling, Trump’s name was removed in June, while controversy persisted.

New Naming Strategy

The board later approved a revised plan to keep Kennedy’s name while also associating Trump with the center. They proposed naming the venue “John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump” and the grounds as “President Donald J. Trump Plaza.” Administration lawyers argue this does not equate to a formal renaming since the official name remains unchanged.

Opponents argue this attempt indirectly defies court orders. The recent hearing centered on the board’s compliance with judicial orders.

The naming battle is closely linked to the Kennedy Center’s extensive renovation needs. Recent court filings claim that financial and structural challenges necessitate major work, with donor support contingent upon acknowledging Trump’s contributions.
