House Minority Leader Addresses Party Conflict

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat from New York, announced a possible “serious response” against two Democratic lawmakers for their recent actions. This statement was made during his appearance on “The Don Lemon Show.” The two lawmakers, Reps. Jared Golden from Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez from Washington, aided Republicans in passing a procedural rule. This rule was instrumental in advancing several GOP-backed measures, including an anti-socialism resolution.

Jeffries highlighted the significance of the action taken by Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez by stating that it warranted attention from the House Democratic Caucus’ Committee on Caucus Rules. The leadership deemed their move a “significant breach” calling for a thorough response. The matter was subsequently referred to the committee for further evaluation.

Legislation and Political Ramifications

The criticism faced by Golden originated from his decision to support legislation crucial to Maine’s lobster industry. Golden’s Communications Director, Mario Moretto, clarified that the decision to vote with the Republicans was motivated by the need to advance the Northeast Lobstermen Protection Act, a bill critical to his constituency.

The procedural vote tallied 210-208, with Reps. Golden, Gluesenkamp Perez, and one independent joining 207 Republicans. Without their support, the resolution would have faltered in a tied vote. The outcome led to further consideration of H.R. 9436, relevant to Golden’s district.

Legislative Impacts and Broader Reactions

Golden’s legislation seeks to extend a moratorium on proposed regulations designed to protect the endangered North Atlantic right whale. The extension, valid until 2035, would allow more time for regulators to gather pertinent data. Golden emphasized that these regulations posed a risk to Maine’s lobster industry and celebrated the bill’s approval, underscoring bipartisan collaboration in Congress.

Gluesenkamp Perez also defended her vote, articulating its importance for working waterfronts. She stressed that her decision stemmed from listening to the affected people rather than outdated data. Her statement, relayed to Fox News, redirected focus to the needs of communities relying on natural resources.

Party Leadership’s Reaction

Jeffries’ warning followed a denunciation from House Democratic leaders, who censured Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez. The two had executed their vote unexpectedly on a procedural ballot, nearly failing without their support. Democratic leaders, including Jeffries, House Minority Whip Katherine Clark, and House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, urged swift action from the caucus rules committee.
