Ocasio-Cortez Leads 2028 Democratic Presidential Field in New Hampshire Poll

In New Hampshire, Ocasio-Cortez has emerged as a leading candidate in the 2028 Democratic presidential race, surpassing Pete Buttigieg and significantly outpacing Kamala Harris in a recent poll. The University of New Hampshire Granite State Poll shows Ocasio-Cortez garnering 22% support among likely Democratic primary voters. She leads Buttigieg by one point and is ahead of Harris by 17 points. Ocasio-Cortez has gained seven points since the previous survey in February, while Harris and California Governor Gavin Newsom have lost support.

Nearly half of socialists and one-third of progressives support Ocasio-Cortez, while pluralities of liberals and moderates support Buttigieg, stated Andrew Smith, director of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center.

Ocasio-Cortez has not confirmed her 2028 intentions, leaving the door open for either a presidential run or a Senate bid against Sen. Chuck Schumer, who faces re-election in two years. She recently remarked that her objective is to “change the country.”

Buttigieg, having finished second in New Hampshire’s 2020 primary, continues to support Democrats nationwide, fueling speculation of a possible 2028 campaign.

Other poll results show Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona with 9% support and Gavin Newsom slightly behind. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, at 84 years old, stands at 6% and has humorously dismissed another presidential run. Kamala Harris, the party’s candidate in 2024 after succeeding President Joe Biden, saw her support drop from 10% to 5%.

The New Hampshire primary, a long-standing tradition, shifted after Democrats prioritized South Carolina for the 2024 cycle. The Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws panel plans to propose a new 2028 calendar. Republicans maintain Iowa and New Hampshire as their lead-off states.

For the GOP nomination, 36% of likely Republican primary voters in New Hampshire support Vice President JD Vance, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio at 26%. Sen. Rand Paul and Nikki Haley each have 8% support, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has 6%.
