Former Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin Arrested Following Court Orders Violation

Former Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin was arrested on Thursday after persistently defying court orders related to ongoing family court and child support disputes. Bevin, a Republican ally of President Donald Trump, governed Kentucky from 2015 to 2019. He was apprehended by the Bourbon County Sheriff’s Office and taken to Louisville Metro Corrections.

This development resulted from a bench warrant issued by Jefferson County Family Court Judge Angela Johnson, citing civil contempt. The warrant requires Bevin to serve 60 days in jail and pay a $500 fine.

Arrested on a Movie Set

Local reports indicated that Bourbon County Sheriff’s Office received a tip-off via 911, leading deputies to detain Bevin in Paris, Kentucky, where he was acting as an extra in the film ‘The Greatest Christmas Gift.’ Jessica Mohr, owner of the filming location, recounted the sheriff’s search for Bevin. Deputies found him conversing with the lead actor before his arrest.

A Contentious Family Dispute

The dispute concerns Bevin’s ex-wife, Glenna Bevin, and their adopted son, Jonah. The court mandated both parents to provide detailed financial records for assessing child support and financial provisions. While Glenna Bevin complied, Matt Bevin failed to submit the necessary documentation.

Jonah Bevin, adopted in 2012 from Ethiopia, accused his parents of abandoning him at 17. After intervention by authorities, Jonah claimed he was left unsupported and began seeking financial aid, as reported last year.

Following his father’s arrest, Jonah expressed sadness, stating that adoption should be permanent. Jonah’s attorneys emphasized that the arrest was not a cause for celebration, highlighting Jonah’s need for financial support.

Judge’s Sharp Rebuke

Months of legal tension continued as Bevin was previously held in contempt in May for missing a court appearance, opting to pay a $250 fine instead of jail time. Bevin claimed he missed the hearing due to a mishap at his Maine residence. Despite requesting additional time, the court demanded financial disclosures by June 5, leading to the eventual arrest warrant.

Judge Johnson criticized Bevin for his lack of cooperation, stating the court would not reward bad faith actions with leniency or relief. The focus remains on whether Bevin will provide the requested records to be potentially released from custody.

Trump and Bevin’s History Explained

As governor, Bevin was a prominent conservative figure, closely aligning with Trump’s agenda. Trump endorsed Bevin’s unsuccessful 2019 reelection, but Bevin lost narrowly to Democrat Andy Beshear.
