Four Senate Republicans joined Democrats to stop an attempt to pass President Donald Trump’s voter ID and election integrity legislation. This move came as the GOP aimed to secure funding for immigration enforcement. Republicans Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Mitch McConnell, and Thom Tillis sided with Democrats in the vote.
This marks the second unsuccessful attempt by Republicans to include the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act in their budget reconciliation package. This effort follows a previous attempt to spark debate on the bill in the Senate.
The GOP needed at least 60 votes to attach the bill to a nearly $70 billion package aimed at funding Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol.
The Republicans fell short again on Thursday night. The outcome highlights the challenges the SAVE America Act faces in the Senate. The Act is unlikely to succeed, given unanimous Democratic opposition and insufficient support from all Senate Republicans, despite Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s push for a talking filibuster.
Senator Lindsey Graham criticized Democrats for rejecting the amendment. He accused them of facilitating cheating in elections by opposing voter ID requirements. “There’s no other reason to say you don’t have to have an ID,” Graham stated. He also expressed concerns about non-citizens voting and opposed policies related to transgender issues, saying, “That’s the biggest change you can make in your entire life. You shouldn’t be allowed to do that as a minor.”
Senator Alex Padilla highlighted that a similar proposal was rejected recently on a bipartisan basis. Padilla defended current voter safeguards, stating, “It is already unlawful for non-citizens to vote in the United States.” He argued that the amendment mirrors previous attempts to advance the president’s election policies.
Padilla also critiqued the focus on transgender issues during pride month, calling it offensive.
