Trial Begins for Accused in Deaths of Surfers in Mexico

On Monday, the trial commenced for three men accused of murdering two Australian surfers and an American in a Mexican surfing location. This trial marks two years since the tragic incident occurred.

The victims, Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson, aged 30 and 33, and their American friend Jack Carter Rhoad, 30, were enjoying a surfing trip along Mexico’s Pacific coast in April 2024. Sadly, they were found dead in Baja California state, victims of gunshot wounds, in what authorities suspect was a robbery attempt.

The attack occurred as the group was camping in a secluded beachside area. Their bodies were discovered several days later, dumped in a cliff-top shaft. Investigators recovered their burned pickup truck near the scene.

The Robinsons’ parents, Debra and Martin, attended the trial’s opening in Ensenada, seeking justice for their sons. “It’s about representing our sons, being here for them,” Martin Robinson expressed. He emphasized their desire to understand the events leading to their sons’ deaths.

The surfers were reported missing on April 27, 2024. The following day, they were attacked, as per the prosecution’s account. Their remains were located on May 3, 2024.

On the first day of the trial, three witnesses testified. A key witness was the stepson of one defendant, who portrayed his stepfather as violent. Speaking from another room, his identity hidden, he recounted the events that led to the crime, explaining that he withdrew from the scene but returned under pressure.

“I heard a lot of noise,” he recalled. He also mentioned being threatened by the group, saying, “the same thing that happened to the gringos would happen to him” if he disclosed anything.

Ary Gisell Silva, the witness’s stepfather’s girlfriend, received a 20-year sentence last year after admitting her role in the crime. She had urged the robbery for the pickup’s tires. Evidence revealed she first interacted with the tourists and identified them as having valuable items.

Photos of the victims were displayed on Ensenada’s beach on May 5, 2024, showing the community’s commitment to remembering the surfers.

In the United States and Australia, the case sparked widespread grief and sparked a social media-driven search campaign. Callum Robinson had been a professional lacrosse player in the U.S., while Jake pursued a medical career, preparing to start work in Australia. Rhoad, soon to be married, left his fiancée devastated. “He was my safety in the world,” she tearfully stated.

Baja California, known for violence associated with organized crime and drug trafficking, rarely sees tourists affected by cartel activities. Nonetheless, past incidents have targeted foreign visitors, like the 2015 murder of Australian surfers Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman in Sinaloa.
