A pastor from Elbow Lake, Minnesota, died after sustaining a severe spinal cord injury during an Italian cruise celebrating his son’s wedding. Steve Junker was aboard the Sun Princess on August 16 when he suffered a fall and was later discovered unresponsive in a pool, as detailed in a GoFundMe page set up by his family.
Princess Cruises confirmed his death in a statement to Fox News Digital, expressing condolences to his family and loved ones. The cruise line reported that personnel were notified on August 16 about a passenger requiring medical assistance.
“The guest was attended to by the ship’s medical team and subsequently transferred ashore for further care,” stated the cruise line.
Following the incident, Junker was transported by an Italian Coast Guard boat to a hospital in Naples and admitted to the intensive care unit. He underwent emergency spinal surgery the next day. Although surgery was successful, his spinal cord injury remained critical.
The family faced difficulties managing his medical care overseas and endeavored to arrange his transport to a U.S. hospital. “We are working through the medical, logistical and financial challenges of arranging appropriate medical transport,” they wrote prior to his passing.
Junker was eventually moved to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, on August 23 for further treatment. The family expressed their gratitude for the support received, urging friends and loved ones to keep Junker in their prayers.
His church, Chippewa Lutheran Church, paid tribute to him on Facebook following his passing on September 4. The church highlighted the impact his faith had on many people and shared a touching note from his son, Nathaniel Junker.
“Pastor Steve was a wonderful person, loved by many,” the church wrote.
“He closed his eyes to this life and opened his eyes to Jesus,” the post continued.
Steve Junker previously worked as a pharmacist before transitioning to ministry. He leaves behind a wife, five children with their spouses, a grandchild, and other family members. Mourners on Facebook expressed sorrow and support for those grieving his loss.
