Giants Honor 9/11 Anniversary During Game Against Cowboys

Before the New York Giants faced the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium on Sunday Night Football, the venue commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a heartfelt tribute. This event aimed to honor the victims and first responders of that tragic day.

Fans entering MetLife Stadium encountered FDNY’s ceremonial Ladder 343 truck and a World Trade Center steel beam displayed by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Outside the gates, two beams of light rose into the sky, reminiscent of the World Trade Center’s ‘Tribute in Light.’

The ceremony featured a joint national anthem performance by members of the NYPD and FDNY. On the field, a massive 100-yard American flag, held by players, coaches, and Giants season-ticket holders, stretched from end zone to end zone. Jaxson Dart and Malik Nabers of the Giants watched as fireworks lit up the stadium before the game.

New York City first responders formed a welcoming gauntlet for the Giants during their player introductions. Teams on the sideline donned commemorative NYPD, FDNY, and PAPD hats, while players and coaches wore ‘Never Forget’ T-shirts during warm-ups.

Members of the Palumbo family, who lost their FDNY father on 9/11, served as honorary captains for the coin toss. A moving photo montage of lives lost on September 11 played on the stadium’s video boards during a moment of silence.

Giants legends joined uniformed first responders for the traditional ‘Go Big Blue’ chant before the kickoff. For John Harbaugh, the new Giants coach who joined from Baltimore, this tribute had deep meaning.

“It’s a story about heroes who were willing to run toward danger while others were trying to escape it,” Harbaugh said. “To be in New York and honor the heroes of that day who live on forever in our culture, that means everything. You honor it with your effort.”

With Harbaugh at the helm, the Giants are hopeful for an improved season. Head Coach John Harbaugh, along with his players, stood on the sideline during the national anthem, reflecting on the significance of the night’s tribute.

Service members saluted the flag, underscoring the solemnity of the occasion as fans and players alike paid their respects during the national anthem.
