The Big Story
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently addressed active-duty officers at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. During this speech, he presented six new initiatives aimed at strengthening the Pentagon’s capabilities.
Key announcements included the formation of a new combatant command dedicated to advancing autonomous warfare technologies. He also highlighted fresh partnerships with colleges, the establishment of a new Office of Religious Affairs, and the involvement of governors in developing a new military base within the United States.
Hegseth’s speech wasn’t free from criticism; he reiterated his stance against cultural shifts within the military, emphasizing traditional values and condemning media portrayals of the Iran conflict. His beliefs on reviving the ‘warrior ethos’ were clear, stating that the U.S. military has been ‘rebuilt.’
“I like to think last year’s Quantico speech was ‘Liberation Day’ for leaders, for you, to be the apolitical, hard-charging, commonsense, no-nonsense constitutional leaders that you joined the military to be,” Hegseth said. He referred to his previous address to high-ranking military officials.
Hegseth outlined his plan to reduce the number of top officers at the Pentagon. He argued that the reduction of 20 percent of generals and admirals was long overdue.
