El Niño Strengthens to Historic Levels: What to Expect This Season

1 hour ago 0

Forecasters are monitoring this year’s El Niño, which has been deemed the strongest on record. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center noted in a recent update that El Niño has intensified further. They anticipate a strong-to-very strong El Niño from January to March, with models suggesting continued strengthening through the year.

There is a significant likelihood of an event surpassing previous El Niños in strength since 1950. Columbia University climate scientist Azhar Ehsan reported a near-certain probability for El Niño to persist into spring. NOAA also predicts its presence for another six months, while hinting at a possible upcoming La Niña pattern.

The Climate Prediction Center tracks the chances of El Niño in three-month periods, expecting it to peak in December. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) forecasts rising sea-surface temperatures during this period. According to WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo, El Niño releases oceanic heat, leading to dramatic temperature increases. The ocean’s temperature is currently at historically high levels, enabling this process.

Nexstar chief meteorologist Brian James highlighted the significant impact of El Niño over the upcoming months. The northern U.S. is expected to experience drier and warmer conditions, while the southern regions may face cooler and wetter weather. Daniel Swain from the California Institute for Water Resources expressed concern over this unprecedented event within the context of climate change. He noted the urgent signals it presents.

California has announced a state of emergency due to the anticipated weather changes. In Los Angeles, preparations are underway for potential impacts. Ehsan remarked on similarities between this year’s conditions and the 1997 El Niño, which set records with extreme weather. Temperature and precipitation forecasts for the rest of the year align with typical El Niño patterns.
