No Charges for Parents in Colorado High School Shooting Incident

2 months ago 0

Authorities in Colorado announced on Wednesday that they will not be pressing gun-related charges against the parents of a teenager involved in a high school shooting last fall where two students were critically injured. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, there was insufficient evidence to implicate the parents of Desmond Holly, 16, after investigating potential charges related to firearm access or storage following the tragic shooting at Evergreen High School on September 10.

Holly, who was identified as the shooter, used a Smith & Wesson .38 Special revolver in the incident before he turned the weapon on himself, resulting in his death. Investigators have disclosed that the revolver was securely stored in a locked gun safe, and DNA tests did not connect either parent to the weapon.

“The parents were thoroughly reviewed, but we found no legal basis to move forward with charges,” the sheriff’s office stated.

The investigation identified the revolver as a family heirloom, confirming that Holly did not have regular access to the safe where it was stored. The parents cooperated with the authorities from the outset, initially speaking with them right after the event and later providing written statements through their legal representatives.

During the incident, which took place in Evergreen, Colorado, about 30 miles from Denver, Holly randomly opened fire without targeting specific individuals. Law enforcement officials noted that he had been radicalized by extremist content online. However, after a detailed investigation, there was no evidence linking him to any specific extremist ideology.

Early stages of the inquiries suggested that Holly might have been influenced by an unspecified extremist network, but it was determined that his interest was primarily due to an unhealthy fascination with previous school shooting events. The Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism reviewed Holly’s online activities and verified that he interacted with violent content, including references to the notorious 1999 Columbine High School attack, which occurred nearby in the same county.

The family’s attorney has been contacted for further comments on the situation. This news comes as a part of broader discussions on gun control and safety in schools. Reports from this investigation underline the complexity and sensitivity surrounding access to firearms and their potential impact when mishandled.
