The Los Angeles Lakers center Jaxson Hayes has been suspended for one game over an unusual interaction with the Washington Wizards’ mascot, known as “G-Wiz.” This incident transpired during the pregame introductions of the Lakers-Wizards match held last Friday.
As “G-Wiz” paraded down the court carrying a Wizards flag, he unexpectedly collided with Hayes in a manner reminiscent of a forceful NFL-style tackle while approaching the Lakers’ bench. Fortunately, “G-Wiz” reportedly emerged unscathed from this encounter.
Despite the pregame incident, Hayes effectively contributed to his team’s victory, scoring 10 points, grabbing three rebounds, and providing an assist as the Lakers decisively defeated the Wizards with a final score of 142-111. Nonetheless, the NBA announced that Hayes will miss Thursday’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers due to the suspension.
Originally selected as the No. 8 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks, Hayes’ draft rights were traded to the New Orleans Pelicans. Before turning professional, Hayes showcased significant talent while playing for the Texas Longhorns. During his four seasons with the Pelicans, he played in 241 games, averaging 7.5 points and 2.6 rebounds.
In anticipation of the 2023-24 season, Hayes signed a contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. This season, he has been contributing an average of 6.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per game over the course of 41 games. The Lakers currently hold a 30-19 record, placing them sixth in the Western Conference as the All-Star break approaches.
