A tragic event unfolded in Peshawar, Pakistan, as the roof of a private school collapsed, resulting in the deaths of at least 28 children and a female teacher. More than 50 others were injured, according to Mohammad Asim, a hospital spokesman. This devastating incident occurred on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, at a school in northwestern Pakistan.
Among the deceased were six girls, and many of those injured were in critical condition. The victims were all children aged 13 or younger. A hospital emergency was declared as medical staff worked hard to treat the wounded.
Rescue efforts took several hours, and the officials later confirmed that all individuals trapped beneath the debris had been safely rescued. Bilal Faizi, an emergency services spokesman, noted the involvement of rescue workers and volunteers in the difficult task of clearing rubble and searching for survivors.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi expressed his sorrow over the tragedy, directing authorities to investigate the cause of the collapse and ensure the best medical care for the injured. Mahwish Zaman, a teacher injured in the collapse, shared her harrowing experience from the hospital, recalling the moment the roof fell while she was teaching.
The emergency response was immediate, with rescue workers and residents rushing to the scene. A local resident, Samiullah Khan, described his desperate efforts to save children from the debris, thankful that his son survived by stepping out of his classroom moments before the collapse.
At Lady Reading Hospital, distraught parents anxiously awaited news of their children. The cause of the collapse is under investigation, with the school’s owner already arrested for operating a structurally unsound building. Samar Haroon Bilour, a government spokeswoman, praised rescue worker efforts and highlighted the government’s focus on utilizing resources to ensure the safety of affected individuals.
Leaders across Pakistan, including President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, conveyed their condolences to the families and stressed the importance of investigating the incident and enforcing building safety standards to prevent future tragedies.
Unfortunately, building collapses are recurrent in Pakistan, often due to poor construction practices and the use of substandard materials. A similar incident in July in Lahore emphasized the need for stricter adherence to safety regulations as four children tragically lost their lives.
