President Donald Trump voiced strong criticism against Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed on Thursday. Trump made remarks during a lunch in the White House Rose Garden, claiming El-Sayed’s alleged connections to the Muslim Brotherhood.
“He’s a Muslim Brotherhood guy, 100%,” Trump stated. He questioned El-Sayed’s suitability, suggesting skepticism if he served on the Senate Intelligence Committee. This assertion follows scrutiny El-Sayed has faced from Republicans about his potential family connections to the Islamist group.
El-Sayed, however, has consistently denied these allegations. In a recent NBC Meet the Press interview, he refuted any ties, stating, “I have no ties; we have no ties.” He criticized his opponents, accusing them of anti-Muslim rhetoric instead of debating policy issues.
“[Opponent Mike Rogers’] only strategy is to point to me and my name and my faith,” he explained, suggesting that the focus was on differences in prayer rather than policy.
El-Sayed is viewed as a liberal candidate, yet maintains support among Muslim voters akin to support for Ilhan Omar, according to some observations. His half-sister, Eman Abdelhadi, previously posted social media messages suggesting their mother’s involvement with the Muslim Brotherhood during her college years in Egypt in the 1970s.
“Had an amazing talk with my mom about her activism in the Muslim Brotherhood during the early 70s while she was in college, #respect,” Abdelhadi shared in 2012 on X, adding, “My family has long been MB, but I’ve always felt that it has navigated the political sphere poorly/destructively.”
Despite these posts, El-Sayed continues to face Trump’s criticisms. Trump expressed plans to visit Michigan, aiming to highlight what he described as El-Sayed’s misrepresentation.
“He’s a fraud. He’s a con man,” Trump remarked. Fox News Digital is seeking further comments from El-Sayed’s campaign.
