Quarterback Ty Dieffenbach had an impressive first start for UCLA after Nico Iamaleava’s injury, leading the No. 12 Bruins to a 17-7 victory over Wisconsin. This win keeps the Bruins as the only unbeaten team in the Big Ten.
Dieffenbach threw for 264 yards, guiding UCLA to a bowl-eligible record of 6-0 under coach Bob Chesney. During a crucial fourth quarter, Dieffenbach masterminded a six-play, 89-yard drive that solidified the Bruins’ lead.
Despite UCLA’s reputation for a powerful running game, Wisconsin’s defense, ranked 15th in total defense and ninth in passing yards, limited UCLA to 3.2 yards per carry. Key player Wayne Knight managed only 29 all-purpose yards, scoring his 12th touchdown of the season.
Dieffenbach’s performance filled the gap left by Iamaleava’s injury. He completed 22 of 33 pass attempts, just under Iamaleava’s career best. One pivotal play was a 21-yard pass to Jalen Saint Paul, setting up Knight’s one-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
The Bruins’ second touchdown resulted from Dieffenbach’s leadership on a drive that started at the UCLA 11. Passes of 28 and 33 yards concluded with Anthony Woods scoring on a three-yard run. Despite a Hail Mary interception as time expired in the second quarter, Dieffenbach handled pressure well, suffering only one sack.
UCLA’s defense proved dominant, restricting Wisconsin to 214 total yards. Even without cornerback Rodrick Pleasant, the secondary held Wisconsin to 66 passing yards, and key receiver Jaylon Domingeaux to 26 yards. Linebacker Jalen Woods made critical plays, including a sack that pressured Wisconsin into a missed field-goal attempt before halftime.
Wisconsin aim to shift momentum with a late third-quarter chance, but UCLA’s defense forced incomplete passes and maintained control. In the closing moments, UCLA’s defense stopped Wisconsin’s Darrion Dupree on fourth down, ending the Badgers’ comeback bid.
